Brisbane City Council engaged PreviousNext & Acquia to optimise the hosting, support and content delivery infrastructure for OurBrisbane, one of Australia’s most popular Drupal sites.

Challenge

In early 2011, Brisbane City Council’s OurBrisbane website was one of Australia’s highest traffic Drupal sites, with over 1 million visitors and 3 million page views per month. The site was being hosted internally, but the Council wanted a more efficient, high performance hosting solution.

Solution

PreviousNext proposed an innovative partnership with Boston-based Acquia, in which Acquia provided the physical hosting on its world-class, Drupal-optimised platform, while PreviousNext provided Tier 1 support to the OurBrisbane web team. PreviousNext also migrated the site’s 120,000 articles to the Acquia hosting platform and optimised content delivery via the provision of an Australian-based Content Delivery Network (CDN) node.

Outcome

Brisbane City Council realised cost savings of up to 50% on the new hosting platform and received more streamlined support. Furthermore, the introduction of the Content Delivery Network significantly reduced page load times for OurBrisbane. Despite the success and public's attachment to the site, Brisbane City Council decided to cease publishing OurBrisbane in July 2011 as part of post-flood cost-saving exercises.
